FAQs
Do I need a landline for broadband? ›
Do you need a landline to get broadband? With most broadband providers, you need a physical phone line hooked up to your home in order to get broadband. That's because your internet is connected through the same cables.
Which is the best WiFi connection for home? ›Airtel Fiber has been recognized as the best WiFi internet service provider in India. With our fast and secure plans, get good network coverage with indoor as well as outdoor connectivity, great performance on the World Wide Web, amazing roaming services, and almost no downtime.
Which broadband is cheapest in UK? ›ADSL broadband, also known as standard broadband, is the cheapest type of broadband available in the UK. This offers average speeds of around 11Mbps - enough for basic web browsing and occasional streaming - though this may vary considerably depending on factors such as where your home is located.
Is fiber cheaper than broadband? ›The fiber-optic internet cost can be more expensive and will depend on your usage, the speed of the internet you want, and your location. You may also need to pay installation and activation fees.
Is broadband internet better than fiber? ›The difference between traditional broadband and fibre is mainly down to speed. A fibre connection has the potential to be much faster and has a bigger bandwidth than other broadband options.
What is the best way to get broadband without a landline? ›If you're determined to avoid paying line rental, these are the options available to you: Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband – FTTP is a specific full fibre broadband service. It bypasses the old copper phone lines by using fibre-optic cabling all the way to your home so you don't need a landline to use it.
Is there any reason to keep a landline? ›In an emergency, a good old-fashioned landline phone has been regarded as the most reliable method of communication. When storms knock out power, cell towers often go dark, as do high-speed internet connections. Landlines, on the other hand, work without power or battery-operated phones.
Is broadband and wifi the same thing? ›Wifi is a wireless connection between multiple devices and your router, and just one of the ways you can access the internet. Broadband is the actual internet connection afforded by your internet service provider (ISP), which you can access directly via a LAN or ethernet connection between your modem and device.

Is it worth switching to fiber internet? ›A fiber connection offers a more reliable internet connection compared to other internet connection types, such as cable internet. This is because data is transmitted through fiber-optic cables in the form of charged LED lights.
What are the disadvantages of fiber optic internet? ›Although fiber optic networks present many advantages, there are also some disadvantages to take into consideration. These include physical damage, cost considerations, structure, and the possibility of a “fiber fuse”.
Why is fiber so expensive? ›Is fiber optic internet cheaper? Fiber optic internet is more expensive than traditional cable, DSL, and phone company internet services. This is because fiber optic cables are made of glass, which is a more durable and reliable material than the plastic used in other cables.
Does Xfinity use cable or fiber? ›In most of its service area, Xfinity provides connectivity using the same sort of coaxial cable it's long employed for TV service – a technology that allows for fast downloads but considerably slower uploads. A few Xfinity customers have fiber optic cable service with download speeds that are just as fast as uploads.
Is fibre broadband better than 5G? ›Comparison: 5G vs Fiber
Whereas 5G can have downlink speed up to the scale of 20 Gbps and 10 Gbps uplink. On the other hand, theoretical speed of Fiber Optic can reach upto 1 Petabit per second, while practical speed measured on Fiber cables is 100 Gbps.
While some DSL providers are capable of delivering an internet speed that rivals the low end of cable and fiber-optic connections, less than half of households have access to DSL internet speeds that would actually qualify as broadband internet (25Mbps download, 3Mbps upload).
Does a wireless router need to be plugged into a phone line? ›A phone port is necessary as you need to establish a connection through a landline. Note: You may get wifi without a phone jack, though, because internet service does not require a phone connection.
Do you need wifi for cable TV? ›

How can I get internet in rural areas? ›The best internet service for rural areas is satellite internet from HughesNet or Viasat, but we'd recommend HughesNet for its better prices and lack of prices. Plus, if you need to purchase more data, HughesNet lets you roll it over for as long as it lasts, unlike Viasat.
How much longer will landlines be around? ›Yes. Once the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) network is switched off in 2025 you will no longer be able to make phone calls via landline with no internet connection.
Is AT&T getting rid of landlines? ›Back in August of 2022, the FCC announced that US Telecom companies are no longer required to provide copper landline services.
